ChatGPT's base responses draw on training data, which means brand mentions that existed across the web before the training cutoff. Reddit was 22% of GPT-3's training data. For real-time queries with Browse enabled, ChatGPT retrieves current web pages. A strong Reddit presence feeds both the training signal and real-time retrieval.

Perplexity (real-time RAG)

Perplexity uses Retrieval-Augmented Generation: it searches the web in real time, retrieves top sources, then synthesizes an answer with explicit citations. Getting cited in Perplexity requires your brand to appear in the pages Perplexity retrieves for a given query. Google AI Overview (Gemini + real-time)

Google AI Overview uses Gemini grounded in Google's index, with heavy weighting toward sources Google already trusts for organic search. Reddit threads ranking in Google SERPs are also pulled into AI Overview responses. Reddit SEO and LLM citations reinforce each other here, as a ranking Reddit thread can produce both a blue-link organic result and an AI Overview citation.

Claude (training + Constitutional AI)

Claude's responses draw on training data and, in API contexts, real-time retrieval. Claude is trained to cite authoritative sources and provide balanced recommendations. Brands with strong third-party coverage across Reddit, industry publications, and review sites appear more consistently in Claude responses than brands relying on self-published content alone.

Citation frequency

Share of voice vs. competitors

Citation frequency matters in context. We track how often your brand is cited versus the top three to five competitors for each target query. Gaining citation share from competitors is often more achievable in the short term than creating new citation demand from scratch.

Citation sentiment

Being cited is necessary but not sufficient. Negative citations ("avoid X due to pricing issues") are worse than no citation.
